Well I stopped watching at 8pm because I needed to get some other things done around the house. I don't know when the meeting got over. Several people attended and spoke. The council discussed it fairly well. Moore brought up pretty much the same issues we talked about regarding the increase in costs. I don't know that the answer she got really explained the reason all that well - at least to my satisfaction. It was hard to hear some of the other members speak due to technical issues. I could barely hear Foster. I don't think they will be voting on this next meeting. There's too many issues that were brought up. I'd suspect portions of it might go forward but I don't think the whole thing will -- but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the write up Kris. I look forward to watching the meeting on the internet. It was our neighborhood meeting night and we've been trying hard to get additional people involved so I did not want to miss it. How did council respond? Was there much discussion?

Ok well I have a little more of the details on the recycling portion. In addition to your regular garbage can, we'll also have a 65 gallon can just for recyclables - no need to sort them. A good portion of our garbage is recyclable so if it helps make it easier to recycle, I'd be for it. Tonight, hopefully we'll get more details on the plan.

I think you have it right. It doesn't make any sense to me either. Why would we pay more for half the service we're currently receiving? The recycling changes are long overdue but they need to rethink the rest. The once a week service is just going to encourage more illegal dumping around town. Businesses better lock their dumpsters. I think we'd still be able to have twice a week service but we'd have to pay through the nose to get it! And we'd have to buy $1.50 stickers for any additional bag we place next to the garbage can. What a pain. Who wants to go out and buy stickers whenever we have extra junk to toss out? I don't think it's such a great idea to have garbage sitting around in a can for an entire week either. Mix diapers and leftovers from dinner, have them bake in the Summer heat for a week inside a garbage can and then open the lid. Not a good thing!

wow what I don't get is: rates going up and service going down. dramatically down actually. To cut back from 2 times a week to once a week and to eliminated back door pickup and let the city take on the billing... What then is the justication for the rate increase. Which in the case of recycling it 3x as much. Huh? I'm I understanding this correctly or am I getting something wrong here?

There used to be more shopping areas downtown. The building behind the library, which used to be rented out to merchants and the other little mall, can't remember the name, across from the jail had spots. The amount of space to rent is really limited as of right now. Even if a merchant was ready with the cash to get started, there's not many spaces to rent. I think the old Millikin bank building's ground level floor is going to be divided up, or at least I'm hoping it will to provide more space for small businesses. An indoor mall is an interesting idea.

I would love to see downtown with an indoor mall with just such a set of small spaces for small business, very like the one in Forsyth. Downtown has never been the place to go in my time (it was Forsyth's Hickory Point for me), but I know in my mother's time it was a happening place.

It's a shame really, downtown could be everything it was with some work and renewal done in it. We have the Avon, the Lincoln, and beautiful old buildings that could really add character to someone's shopping experience if they could be renovated for it.

The next meeting, which I believe is to unveil the plan, is scheduled for mid-July, so you still have time to send your comments.

I went and played mini-golf at Nelson Park with my family yesterday and I was shocked at how badly the course has been maintained. I'm assuming the plan is to rip it all out and put in new? It's really been allowed to go to seed, literally, for the past few years. It's quite sad. I hope one of the first projects is a new mini-golf course at the same location.
