I’m always disgusted when I see 150 year old oak trees in perfect health cut down for new development, or for just plain downright silly reasons. The area of Pershing and MacArthur Road on the northwest side of Decatur comes to mind. This area has several acres of old growth oaks that may be in danger of being lost due to new development. Several trees have already been lost in this area because of recent development and construction projects. I’m afraid we’ll lose even more of these rare trees if someone doesn’t begin ringing the alarm bells. Well, I’m ringing as loud as I can!
I’d like to see this area designated as a historic tree preservation site in Decatur. There’s very few areas on the north side of town, where such trees can still be found. I’d like to see the city draw up an ordinance prohibiting the removal or harm of these trees. This is one part of Pershing Road that is still attractive. I’d like to keep it that way.
