Thoughts on my way to the voting booth…

I never thought I’d ever seriously consider voting for a Republican for president – unless it was John McCain.  I bet a lot of Democrats have said or thought the same thing.

McCain and Palin bring something to the presidency that it hasn’t seen for as long as I’ve been alive – two proven, independent thinking, non-partisan people.  They’re singing my tune!  They both have a history of ruffling feathers in their own party, reforming government, and not going along with party bosses nor the status quo for their own political gain or security.  I can’t help but admire that.

I never thought I’d agree with Republicans on taxes but I do believe raising taxes on corporations is a job killer; and those taxes are only passed on to the employees of those corporations and the consumers of their products anyway.  We, the little people, always tow the line in the end, one way or the other. Corporate America makes sure of that.

One thing that’s really holding me back from jumping on the McCain band wagon is health insurance.  I’m not sure government funded universal health care is the answer; but I haven’t heard much from McCain that impresses me on that issue.  I guess the best answer is to create good jobs for everyone so they can either afford health insurance or have it supplied to them by their employer.  Now, the question is, what administration would be better at creating jobs?  I’m not sure; but I think Governor Palin is right about energy.  There’s a lot of good jobs that could be created on that front.

Those Must Be Some Chairs!

The Decatur City Council recently discussed upgrades to the current city council chambers and maybe I’m just behind the times, or inflation is even worse than I thought, but $2,196.26 for each council member’s chair?   What exactly do those chairs do?  I have a feeling Captain Kirk would be envious.

Take a gander at the last page for the entire budget for the chamber upgrades:

And what makes it so funny?  It’s ALL true!

Closing State Parks Is Simply Wrong

A typical downstate Blagojevich voter.

A typical downstate Blagojevich voter.

Governor Blagojevich hasn’t exactly made a bushel of friends downstate over the past few years.  Enduring threats of funding cuts to state programs has become part of the downstate Illinois experience; however the Governor proposing to close two popular, well-loved state parks is simply wrong on many levels.

Weldon Springs near Clinton and Wolf Creek State Park on Lake Shelbyville are two of the most visited parks in Central Illinois – they’re hardly obscure, no-named parks few people use.  Weldon Springs recently went through major upgrades to its’ campground and a dredging project of the pond has just been completed this year.  It’s one of the best parks in all of Central Illinois for hiking, fishing and canoeing.  Wolf Creek State Park at Lake Shelbyville, is in my opinion, the best park on Lake Shelbyville.  Wolf Creek has a popular camp ground and a heavily used boat ramp.  Hiking and equestrian trails wind through acres of prairie land and woods.  Closing it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Efforts are currently underway to try to keep both parks open; the parks undoubtedly bring badly needed tourism dollars to Central Illinois and their closings would decrease the quality of life for many in the area.  Personally, I doubt the state will save one dime from closing either park, when the lost tourism dollars are taken into account – not to mention how expensive it will be to reopen the parks when we elect a governor who actually cares about downstate Illinois – if that ever happens.

If you care about either of these parks, I’d encourage you to write or call our Governor and tell him what you think!

They Weren’t Kidding About the Barracuda Part – Whoa Palin!

Sarah Palin came out swinging last night against Obama and boy she didn’t hold anything back!  I have to admit I was kind of taken aback by it.  I did enjoy the Styrofoam Greek column line for its’ comical value but the other attacks not so much.  I guess I’m still a Democrat at heart and I even after everything, I still think Obama is basically a nice guy and deserves better treatment than that.  If you’ve ever read this blog before, I’m sure you know I’m one of those unruly female Clinton supporters – you know us angry feminist types, who are basically one bad hair day away from storming the DNC with our double-barreled brassiere sling shots.  But as much as I’m all for seeing a woman in the White House, and not just on the arm of some old white guy, I want the RIGHT woman there. I admire Palin for her toughness – believe me I do – but she’s not exactly what I’m looking for.  As much as I’d love to stick it to the DNC, I just can’t let myself be played a fool by the Republican Party.

I just wish the Democratic Party defended Hillary when the biased media and sexist garbage came her way; it makes me wonder if the Democratic Party really cares about women or not.  If I were to consider only the evidence from this year, I’d have to say a big fat no.  It’s so ironic that Republicans will defend women more than Democrats.  It’s sad really but I’m glad someone is stepping up – even if they are just Republicans.  Ugh.
